Traditional Arts Weekend

Traditional Arts Weekend has become a popular Wheatland event for those seeking more personal instruction.

Over 80 workshops in traditional forms of dance, music, crafts, vocal and instrument instruction provided.

No pre-registration will be required for workshops.   For workshops with limited participation, go to the workshop area 10 minutes prior to the start.   When the number of participants is reached, the workshop will be closed.

Free primitive camping for participants.
Food available to purchase on site. 
Participants can purchase tickets for the entire weekend or a single day.  

Some workshops have limited participation. There are evening performances and dances which include Square, Contra, Swing and Cajun.

All tickets will be available at the Gate! The Gate will open at 3 p.m. on Friday and be open for the weekend.

Guitar – The Rest of The Neck w/Scott McGaughey: Using the basic chord shapes up and down the
neck to create interesting chord voicings, triads, and inversions.
Acoustic Guitar w/Mark Lavengood: Explore basic rhythm techniques, lead playing, and sing and
strumming together. All levels welcome.
Dobro w/Mark Lavengood: Bring your guitar and a slide and play slide guitar like you’ve always
wanted to! This is for all styles of slide guitar – round neck and square neck alike. Slide
functionalities on the whole spectrum of guitars, resonator and acoustic alike, will be explored.

Ithaca Style Fiddling w/Gus Tritsch: Ithaca, NY has a specific style of fiddle music that’s near and
dear to Gus Tritsch’s (of the Wild Shoats) heart. In this class, you’ll learn a simple tune that
incorporates some of the stylistic elements that make the Ithaca sound recognizable, and talk about
how you can take those elements and incorporate them into your own playing.

PPF:
Michigan’s Folk School Landscape w/Micah Ling: Over the last fifteen or so years, Michigan has
seen a boom of folk schools emerging from the UP’s Porcupine Mountains to Detroit and everywhere
in between. Modeled after the Scandinavian folk education style, these community educational
organizations focus on sharing skills in heritage arts, craft, music and dance, building trades, and
more. Join several of the leaders of Michigan’s six folk schools to discuss what folk schools are, what
they offer, and how you can get involved.
Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeships w/Micah Ling: The Michigan Traditional Arts Program
(MTAP) based at Michigan State University has coordinated a statewide folk and traditional arts
apprenticeship program since the mid-1980’s. This program funds and documents mentor artists and
their apprentices in the sharing of traditional arts cultural heritage skills and knowledge. Join MTAP
Associate Director Micah Ling to learn more about this program, and hear from program participants
from Michigan and sibling programs in other regions about their experiences with apprenticeship
learning.

traditions, with performance of 19 th Century tunes. Bring your instrument if you’d like to join in
playing such tunes as Sally Ann, The Old Jawbone, Jenny Get Your Hoecake Done, and Cindy.

Amigurumi Dumbo Octopus w/Caroline Passariello : Come learn the Japanese art of amigurumi!
We’ll be crocheting and stuffing 3D creatures, focusing on a charming Dumbo Octopus. Perfect for
anyone looking to add some handmade magic to their desk or shelf.

Tie Dye Wheatland T-Shirts w/Amanda Fogle
Needle Felting w/Allyson Green: Needle felted characters! Come join using barbed needle and wool
to bring shapes to life. Needle felting weaves together roving into whatever creation you desire. Pipe
cleaner and stuffing provide structure to our figurines and we will needle felting the outside layers
with wool, like sculpting but with felt. Limited to 10 participants.
Chaos Embroidery w/Molly Kozlowski: Come, stitch a square with me; no experience necessary.
We will use fabrics, ribbons, buttons, beads, and thread to create a fun and unique square of textiles.
This simple project is great for all ages and abilities.

ART:
Beginning Wood Carving w/Sandy Holder: This is for very beginners looking to learn how to carve.
Tools and wood are provided but also available for sale. Bring yours if you have them. Limit 8
people; 15 & up

Elegant Crystal Mini Necklace w/The Rusted Rabbit (3 workshops)
DIY Bath Bomb/Bath Scrub w/Four Suns Lavender (2 workshops); ages 10 & up; 15-20 participants
each workshop. This hands-on workshop invites guests to create luxurious, all-natural self-care
products – like bath bombs and body scrubs – using thoughtfully sourced ingredients and lavender
grown on our farm. Along the way, you’ll learn how lavender is grown, harvested, and used
sustainably, and discover its calming benefits from field to finished product.
Fly-Tying w/Dan Lee: Using hooks, thread, feathers, hair, and synthetic materials participants will
craft artificial insects and baitfish used to catch fish
Make and Take A Hanging Basket w/Denise & Matt Hayes
Birds on A Wire w/Jana Boon – in a 4x6 shadowbox picture frame, participants will use rocks to
create a Birds on A Wire project. This class is limited to 16 adults
Copper Bowls w/Eric Sowmick – limited to 15 participants. Boozhu (Hello) my English name is Eric
Sowmich, my spirit name is Miizhaqwad which means Clear Sky in Anishinaabe. I’m a Tribal Elder
of The Black River Swan Creek Band of Saginaw Anishinaabe here in Lower Michigan and my clan is
the Brown Beaver. I work as a Cultural representative for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe which
I have more than 20 years service working for my community
Lip Balm w/Karen Brookshear: Learn some basic lip balm recipes that you can make at home. We'll
discuss the best types of ingredients to use to craft a balm that works for you. Each participant will get
a lip balm to take home. We will be handling hot wax and oil so youngsters may need adult helpers!
Essential Oils w/Karen Brookshear: Come learn some basics of blending essential oils. We will go
over some of the most common oils for regular use and how to use them. Also, you can make a
personalized blend for either germ fighting or stress relief to take home.

Advanced Decorative Clothing Repair w/Niki Bomia
Sewing Circle w/Niki Bomia: Bring a project you are working on and share time with others
Painting with Unconventional Tools w/Kat Zinn: In this workshop, you will create a painting using
things found in nature, such as tree-bark, twigs, leaves, pine cones, etc; as well as ordinary items
found around the house. You will begin by making brushes and a dip pen out of twigs and various
materials. Participants will create a painting on illustration board; using acrylics, ink, their self-made
tools , and a variety of materials; which will be suitable for framing in a standard 11x14 frame. This
workshop is for 12 people, ages 8 & up. The younger participants will need adult supervision.

Imagery & Sound in Songwriting w/Mary Linscheid: in this generative workshop, Mary Linscheid
of the Wild Shoats, participants will channel their inner poets and be guided by striking images and the
sounds of words to write songs. Instead of being the impetus for songwriting, the “narrative” will be
something to be uncovered as we explore images and play with the rhythm and rhyme of language.
