Wheatland Music Organization ~ Preview of upcoming activities!

What: Wheatland Music Organization - Spring Recital.
The Recital of Earful of Fiddle School of Michigan students, and, those whose instrument instruction was underwritten by Wheatland Music Organization, will be presented by instructor Bruce Bauman.  About one dozen students, ranging in age from 4 to 60+, will display their new found musical skills.  Students hail from Grand Rapids, Mt. Pleasant, Mecosta, Rodney, Weidman and Remus.
Who: All ages welcome.
When: Friday, May 2, 2008, 7 p.m.  Social hour will follow the event.  Bring a dessert to share.  Coffee and juice will be provided.
Where: Gladys Wernette Building, located at 7251 50th Avenue (2 miles west and 2 miles south of the M-66 and M-20 intersection in Remus, Michigan.)

What:  Wheatland Music Organization Jamboree - and informal gathering of acoustic musicians, singers and listeners; all ages and abilities welcome.  Share your favorite tune!

What:Wheatscouts featuring Nature Activities and Hike with EcoMan and NatureMan with Part  Deux Trebuchet with Jim Foerch!  Wheatscouts is a family gathering where children and parents sing, play music, dance, make crafts, listen to stories, enjoy each other and nature.
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008~ Nature 10 a.m. to Noon; Trebuchet 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Who: All ages and beginners welcome.  No partner needed.
When: Saturday, May 17, 2008.  Pre-dance instruction at 7 PM, Dance at 7:30 PM.

Fee:  Admission is $5 per person at the door; children under age 18 are free.

       20th ANNUAL TRADITIONAL ARTS WEEKEND

May 23-25 ~ Traditional Arts Weekend ~ Where else can you learn to play the fiddle, go to a day-long bluegrass school, learn songwriting tips, tie a fly for trout season, explore yeast dough baking, practice yogo, learn to Tango, Clog or Swing dance, stargaze with fellow astronomers, weave a black ash basket, make a pine needle rimmed gourd and paint a silk scarf ~ all in one weekend?......At the 20th annual Traditional Arts Weekend held every year in Remus, Michigan over the Memorial Day Weekend.
     Over 80 workshops, dances, performances and hands-on activities for the entire family taught by over 60 instructors.  This very popular Wheatland event is for those seeking more personal instruction in traditional dance, music, song, arts and crafts.
     Traditional Dance workshops scheduled are beginning calling, salsa, Cajun, African, clogging, Cape Breton, waltz clog, French Canadian, swing, tango, Ceili irish dancing and the sword dance as well as evening Contra & Square Dances.  The Traditional Arts workshops include watercolor, essential oils, screen printing, carving fruits & vegetables, mosaic jewelry box, painted silk scarf, black ash baskets, stone bird houses, fly tying, scrimshaw, yeast dough baking, herbal infusion paper making, wheatweaving, goat milk soap & salves, copper punch, pastel chalk drawing, hemp bracelets, hair wreaths, hats, pine needle rim gourd, stippling on gourds and mosaic on the pillar project.  Traditional Music and Instrument workshops are - vocals, bones, uke, banjo, fiddle, songwriting, drumming, hammered dulcimer, mandolin, guitar and a new day long bluegrass school.  Children can take part in yo-yo, juggle sticks juggling, wool sheep, hats and block printing. 
Who: Children, Teens and Adults.

When:  May 23-25, 2008 - held over the Memorial Day Weekend.  Activities begin Friday evening 7:15.  Saturday & Sunday Activities from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30+-p.m.
Where: Wheatland Music Grounds located 2 miles west and 2 miles south of the M-66 and M-20 intersection in Remus, Michigan.  Camp on site for free or book a room offsite.


Food sold on-site.

 

Fee: Pay for an evening, for a day or for the whole weekend. Evening Performances and Dances only $5 each, Daily/Weekend prices for Adults $40/$75, Children 11-15 $12/$20.

NOTE for SCHOOLS ~ Several artists (storytellers, crafts, children's interactive workshops) are available with two week notice such as:

Like Water Drum & Dance ~ a percussion and dance troupe featuring West African traditional arts;

Eileen DeLorenzo ~ a storyteller;

Lois Hartzler ~ a singer and musician working with young children ages 1 to 9.

Artist Liz Wing ~ who conducts beginning water color and scrap wood sculpture workshops for groups with ages 12 to adult.

Bill Jamerson ~ Lumberjack storyteller from the Upper Peninsula ~ K through 6th.

 

 

Wheatland Music Organization also offers:

 

Individualized and subsidized private lessons in hammered dulcimer, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and banjo.  All ages and beginners welcome. Ongoing throughout the year at mutually agreed upon times and locations.  Half hour ($9) and full hour lessons ($18) are offered in eight week sessions.  Registration is ongoing.  Instruments on loan and scholarships are available for those with financial need. 

 

Scholarships for youth and adults in northern lower Michigan wishing to enhance their traditional arts skills.  Download the application form and guidelines from the www.wheatlandmusic.org website; click on Giving and Receiving, then Elyce Fishman Scholarships.

 

Wheatland Music Organization, Inc. is based near Remus, Michigan. The charitable and educational nonprofit organization has grown from offering a single event in 1974, to offering activities year-round, to meet its mission of preserving and presenting the traditional arts. Traditional arts are considered those learned person to person, passed from generation to the next, and influenced by culture, family, ethnicity, and era.

gThe long-awaited Enhanced CD, "At This Stage: 30 Years of Wheatland", is now available for purchase! This disc contains thirteen songs by artists that have graced the Wheatland stage over the last thirty years. Apearing on this disc are: Dewey Balfa, Blue Highway, The Chicken Chokers, Guy Davis, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Johnny Gimble and Texas Swing, The Lost World String Band, The Mammals, Tim and Mollie O'Brien with Jerry Douglas, and Robin & Linda Williams and Their Fine Group. But that's not all! A bonus track at the end of the disc paints an audio portrait of a walk around the Wheatland grounds late on Saturday night. And since this is an Enhanced CD, putting it in your computer's CD drive will allow you to access listings of peformers from the first 30 years (with links to as many of their websites as we could find!) and pictures of the festival that can be used for screen savers or computer desktops.

"At This Stage" is a joint production of the Wheatland Music Organization, CMU Public Radio, and White Pine Music. WPM is a new record label from the Central Michigan University School of Music, dedicated to preserving and promoting the artistic and scholary heritage of Michigan. Proceeds from the sale of this recording go first to support the artists and songwriters, and also to Wheatland, CMU Public Radio, and White Pine Music, who are all dedicated to keeping traditional music ALIVE!
