There is still time to buy tickets for the 38th annual Wheatland Music festival taking place near Remus, Michigan from September 9 – 11th. Ticket seekers may also order tickets, unless sold-out, by calling (989) 967-8561 before 5 p.m. September 7. These late purchased tickets will be held in the buyer’s name at the Pierce Road gate house. Sunday only tickets may also be purchased after 8 a.m. on Sunday, September 11th at the gate house for $25 adults/seniors and $3 for children 5-12.

Whether coming for the entire weekend or Sunday only, attendees will find dozens of traditional arts workshops, concerts and demonstrations to enjoy, along with impromptu jam sessions, arts and crafts, and, a wide variety of unique food vendors across the 160-acre site. Wheatland brings cultures and traditions to its audiences from across the continent and abroad.

On Sunday on the Main Stage a medley of Michigan artists usher in the first morning set with a Gospel Hour followed by a Grammy winner and six-time nominee bluegrass singer/songwriter Peter Rowan. He and his band members bring to the stage more than 100 years in combined traditional music performance and recording experiences. Later in the day, Rhythmic Circus present their “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” percussive and tap dance program. The New England Foundation for the Arts, through the National Dance Project and its Community Connections Fund, kindly awarded Wheatland Music Organization a grant to help support their presentations and workshops. The grant was made possible by the MetLife Community Connections Fund of the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project (NDP) with major support also provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Boeing Company Charitable Trust.

Throughout the weekend, festival goers can take part in hands-on traditional arts workshops from flutes & whistles, banjo, dulcimer, and, fiddle – to drop spindle spinning for the younger set. There are activities for the whole family at Kids Hill include stage performances in magic and storytelling and workshops for learning to play congas, the jaw harp or the bones. Festival goers will want to pack their dance shoes to take part in tap, clogging, tejano, square and contra dance workshops at the new roomier dance pavilion. The festival has become a destination for thousands of friends and generations of families that convene annually rain–or-shine to celebrate those traditional arts that “are learned person to person, passed from generation to the next, and influenced by culture, family, ethnicity, and era.”

Nic Gareiss has studied a broad variety of percussive movement forms from around the world. At age eight he began taking tap lessons with Sam Williams at Vision Studio of Performing Arts in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Soon after, he was exposed to fiddle music and traditional dance at the Wheatland Music Organization’s annual Traditional Arts Weekend. It was there that he had his first instruction in Appalachian clogging with Michigan dance mentor, Sheila Graziano. As a teenager, Nic also studied Irish step dance with John Heinzman, T.C.R.G., Appalachian flat-footing with Ira Bernstein, English clog-dancing with Sheila Graziano, Québécois step dance with Benoit Bourque and improvisation and composition with Sandy Silva.

In 2001, Nic began an educational relationship with the internationally recognized company, Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble. After meeting Footworks’ director, NEA Choreography Fellow Eileen Carson at the Augusta Heritage Center dance camp, Nic was invited to spend nine weeks apprenticing with the company in Annapolis, Maryland. While working with Footworks, Gareiss danced in their evening-length theatre show, Incredible Feets as well as two collaborative works: SoleMates, with StepAfrika and The Crossing, with Grammy-winning recording artist Tim O’Brien.

J. Oscar Bittinger resists talking about himself because he hates the sound of his own typewriter.

We have plied him with strong ale but he will only agree to add more to this “when things settle down”. (Do things ever “settle down” around here?)

This much you could say:

He’s a small town boy singing quietly down the alley of a big, loud car-chase city
A character actor standing in for the leading man’s role
A back porch philosopher on a front porch swing (one arm around smart-pretty Betsy)
A “band oriented” singer & songwriter, currently sans band*.

“Some might call him ‘The Mayor of Bittersweet’….but he’s more of the community manager”
- Sidney G.

Susan performs multicolored music for kids of all ages, lullabies to hospice.

Susan Harrison’s music invites you to join her on a musical Nostalgia trip as you travel with her on a vicarious vacation. She’ll share her original songs that have been described as a blend of rootsy folk rock, jazzy pop, alt-country. Her music is more that blues and joy there are shades of purple and hues of turquoise. Sweet and sassy, Soulful, Clever and fun. A musical hybrid of Janice, Joni, Motown, Bonni and all things she allowed to enter her musical listening palate.

Harrison is a versatile performer from Kalamazoo, Michigan. She has been singing since the day her Aunt Florence’s dog Buddy confirmed her ability when he joined her in song under the dining room table. Her first guitar was a ruler with rubber bands and she continues to stretch her musical elasticity. She attended her first music festival, Woodstock at a young age and continues to seek out inspirational opportunities. As Kalamazoo’s regional coordinator for NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) she strives to promote quality songwriting and never quit learning.
